The latest release from the Department for Education shows that local authority spending on children’s services decreased by 9% in real terms between 2010-11 and 2015-16. Within this there was wide variation between local authorities but overall:
- The proportion dedicated to both children in need and looked after children within total children’s services spending increased by 12 percentage points, from 57% to 69% of the total, between 2010-11 and 2015-16.
- Spend per child in need by the average local council increased by 10% from £9,780 per year in 2010-11 to £10,780 per year in 2015-16.
- Spend per looked after child by the average local council decreased by 2% from £46,740 per year in 2010-11 to £45,650 per year in 2015-16.
