World Heritage Day 2024
In celebration of #WorldHeritageDay learn more about our Heritage projects at Sefton CVS.
Heart of Gold Sefton at 50 project
Our Heart of Gold Sefton at 50 project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, is a celebration of community heritage over the past five decades, with particular attention to three themes:
- Unsung Heroes: people who have influenced and shaped the borough, its communities and neighbourhoods. The inspiration for the ‘Hearts of Gold’ theme, these will include founding members of local charities and other loved and respected local institutions.
- Special Places: including buildings and spaces that have become part of the local landscape and Sefton landmarks – from the restored Southport Pier to the iconic Gormley Statues.
- Memorable Events: from local galas, fairs, Royal Visits and celebrations to international occasions, including sport, art and culture, in town, coast and country locations.
A part of our Sefton at 50 Hearts of Gold project, we are looking for volunteers to help us to research and celebrate Sefton’s local heroes, special places and memorable events.
As a Volunteer Researcher you will help us to research, plan and design a heritage trail in South Sefton to celebrate Sefton’s people, places and memorable events as part of the borough’s 50 year (1974-2024) golden anniversary activities.
The opportunity is open to volunteers to sign up until 5pm, 2 May 2024
You can register your interest here
From this research, 3 locality-based trails, each comprising 25 plaques with digital trail guides, will be prepared to cover North, Central and South Sefton with a borough-wide booklet, and exhibition, showcasing Sefton’s diverse heritage.

Community within Communities Heritage Project
Our Community within Communities project ran from October 2021 to January 2023 and was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. We engaged volunteers and community groups across the borough in a range of heritage activities that have celebrated Sefton’s people and places.
Our Heritage Toolkit is designed for Voluntary, Community and Faith Groups in Sefton and provides the building blocks to running your own heritage projects. Through advice and guidance, we provide step by step information from taking an idea through to its delivery as a community project.

The Our Voice Resource provides a review of the Community Within Community Project. You can learn more about all the aspects of the project, including our Community Heritage Grants Programme, which supported 15 local organisations and the Township Volunteering Programme, as well as the project’s legacy.
