World Suicide Prevention Day 2026

The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024 to 2026 is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”.
Changing the narrative is about transforming how this complex issue is understood, shifting from a culture of silence towards one of openness, empathy and support. It aims to encourage individuals, communities, organisations and governments to engage in open and honest discussions about suicide and suicidal behaviour. As we reach the final year of this theme, the priority is to build on three years of these conversations, to break down barriers, raise awareness and strengthen cultures of understanding and support that continue beyond 2026.
Suicide is a major public health problem with far-reaching social, emotional and economic consequences. An estimated 727,000 people die by suicide each year worldwide, and each suicide profoundly affects many more people. World Suicide Prevention Day is observed every year on 10 September to draw global attention to this issue and to reinforce the message that suicide is preventable. The annual campaign runs until World Mental Health Day on 10 October, though the message of awareness, support and action carries through every day of the year.
Every nation, community, and individual is at a different stage in their understanding and awareness of suicide prevention. No matter where you stand, there are many ways to be involved in World Suicide Prevention Day.
The International Association for Suicide Prevention have built out a range of activities and resources to ensure everyone can participate meaningfully. Whether you are just beginning to learn about suicide prevention or are deeply involved in advocacy, there are opportunities for you to contribute and support this vital cause.
Here are some examples of how you can change the narrative on suicide over World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 and take these conversations through into our daily life:
