Alchemy Crosby needs your vote for a chance to bag £4000!

Alchemy Crosby, Youth & Community Centre is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative!

This cash award will allow Alchemy to bring the whole community together to celebrate 50 years as a youth centre. The centre now host’s a number of different community groups. This has lead to the renaming of Crosby Youth Centre to ‘Alchemy Crosby, Youth and Community Centre’. We will not only be celebrating the last 50 years but also looking ahead to the future as a Youth and Community Centre. The celebration events will take place in 2018

Voting is open in all Tesco stores throughout September and October. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

£15 million Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund – Closing 30th November 2017 (11 LEP Regions of the North of England)

Towns and cities across Northern England are able to bid for a share of a new fund that aims to boost the region’s technology, creative and cultural industries.

The UK Government’s Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund aims to help build a lasting regional legacy from the Great Exhibition of the North planned for Summer 2018. Grants of up to £4 million in each of three financial years (2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21) will be available to eligible Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) in the 11 Northern Regions of England i.e:

  • Cheshire and Warrington
  • Cumbria
  • Greater Manchester
  • Humber
  • Lancashire
  • Leeds City Region
  • Liverpool City Region
  • North East
  • Sheffield City Region
  • Tees Valley
  • York
  • North Yorkshire
  • East Riding.

The funding will support capital expenditure on major culture and tech projects like, for example, opening a new tech start-up centre or renovating live music venues. LEPs are each invited to submit one bid for up to £4million to the Fund. Applications should be for a single capital project that fits within the overall priorities for the Fund and evidences the need for the project and the rationale for intervention in the local area. All projects supported will be expected to increase opportunities for people to experience, benefit from and contribute to culture and creativity.

Merseyside PCC releases £45,000 to help young people make right choices

Community groups which work to divert young people away from crime and anti-social behaviour are being given the chance to bid for grants for projects running during the autumn half-term, thanks to Merseyside’s Police Commissioner.

Jane Kennedy has confirmed that she is once again releasing a round of funding from the Police Property Act Fund (PPA), which allows money raised from the sale of unclaimed stolen goods or property recovered by the police to be used for good causes.

It is the eighth time the Commissioner has invited community organisations, charities and groups to apply for a vital cash boost of up to £5,000 grants for grassroots initiatives which are working to help young people to make the right choices. A total of £45,000 is available from the fund for one-off grants for organisations which are committed to improving community safety, reducing crime or supporting victims.

Jane has already awarded nearly £288,000 through the PPA to organisations that are making a difference in their communities. Since July 2015, the fund has been used to concentrate on youth engagement initiatives.

The Commissioner said: “I am pleased to once again open up the Police Property Act Fund for bids of up to £5,000 to organisations which are working to make their communities safer and better places to live by engaging with young people.

“Many communities across Merseyside traditionally see a rise in criminal and anti-social behaviour during the autumn half-term, particularly around Bonfire and Mischief Night. Historically, it is also a particularly busy time for the police and the fire service. Through these grants, I want to help alleviate these issues and prevent local young people from making mistakes they may regret in the future.

“Once a young person gets a criminal record it can blight their future prospects. If we can prevent them from making mistakes at a young age we can look forward to their positive contribution to their neighbourhoods.

“I want to see these grants used to support projects that complement the excellent diversionary work carried out by Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, ensuring that young people can enjoy the autumn festivities in a safe and enjoyable way which is properly supervised.”

Last year, more than 12,000 young people were able to join organised activities run through 22 different initiatives funded through the PPA over the Halloween and Bonfire Night celebrations.

Jane added: “Local people know their communities best. They know what works when engaging with their young people and I am looking forward to reviewing their ideas and initiatives for ensuring everyone can have a safe and fun Halloween.”

The PPA fund is administered by the Community Foundation for Merseyside, (CFM) on behalf of the Commissioner. CFM holds funds from individuals and organisations as donors who wish to support deserving causes in Merseyside.”

Local groups and organisations with great ideas to make their communities an even better place to live are now invited to apply for funding to turn their ideas into reality.

People’s Health Trust has just launched Active Communities in St Helens, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton and Wirral – a funding programme for local people wanting to create fairer places to grow, live, work and age.

Using money raised by HealthFit through The Health Lottery, People’s Health Trust is looking to invest in projects that support people living in the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods or communities in St Helens, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton and Wirral.

Active Communities is a funding programme for not-for-profit groups with an income of less than £350,000 a year, or an average of £350,000 over two years, seeking investment of between £5,000 and £50,000 for projects lasting up to two years.

Projects could be almost anything that encourages strong connections between people, and that help people to make their communities or neighbourhoods even better places to grow, live, work and age.

We’re looking for small and local projects, genuinely designed and run by local people. By small, we mean just a small group of people on an estate, in a few streets or villages. We’re also looking for great ideas from communities of interest. By this we mean a group of people who have something in common and wish to come together to address something that is important to them. These ideas could be based in one neighbourhood, or cover a wider area.

Merseyside PCC urges Government to listen to public concerns on police cuts

Politicians across the North West of England have come together to call on the Government to reverse years of policing austerity in tomorrow’s Queen’s Speech.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester joined Police and Crime Commissioners for Merseyside, Lancashire and Cheshire in writing to the Home Secretary to ensure that the public’s concerns about police cuts are top of the Government’s agenda. Citing recent attacks and the erosion of neighbourhood policing that provides vital community intelligence they said,

“As Home Secretary you have the ultimate responsibility for ensuring that police forces across the country are properly resourced so they can keep people safe and tackle crime. We are asking that you ensure that this is a priority for the Government by making a clear commitment to reverse austerity in policing in this year’s Queen’s Speech.”

Across the four forces more than £385 million in savings have had to be found since 2010 with a further estimated £90m to be found by 2020. This has meant a reduction of more than 4,000 police officers and 1,500 fewer police staff across the region.

Merseyside’s Police Commissioner Jane Kennedy said: “I have lobbied central government for more funding for our police service for years. It is has now got to the point that Chief Constables and senior policing leaders can no longer stay silent and are speaking out.

“The need is real. It is time ministers listened.

“The thin blue line is stretched like never before and further cuts are damaging all frontline services. The government needs to stop these cuts and, instead, consider how to invest in the service which works so hard to keep us all safe, all of the time.”

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “We urgently need a wholesale review of police funding in the light of the changing times we are living in. Our police forces have absorbed the brunt of cuts as best they can since 2010, but more savings still need to be found and officer numbers are tumbling. As we see the terrorist threat at its highest ever level, and an increase in violent crime, our thin blue line has become dangerously overstretched.

“In Greater Manchester alone we have 2,000 fewer police officers patrolling our streets. This level of pressure cannot be sustained and, without a doubt, Greater Manchester Police needs more officers. Our Chief Constable Ian Hopkins has said that officer numbers are currently at the low end of reasonable, which to me means borderline unreasonable.

“The tragic events of recent months have highlighted just how important the police service is to the safety of our people, and this is an area that cannot simply be pruned back beyond recognition. But even prior to these terror attacks, policing was struggling to cope with the day-to-day demands placed on it. The Government must act now and reverse the cuts before our police service becomes unviable.”

Clive Grunshaw, Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner said, “I hear from people and officers across Lancashire about their concerns about the resources available to the police to do their job and keep communities safe.

“The Government need to listen to these concerns and commit to reversing austerity in policing in the Queen’s Speech this week.

“Despite promises from Ministers around ‘protecting’ budgets Lancashire receives less money every year from the Government to deliver a policing service. My message to the Home Secretary is that this needs to change and we need to start re-investing in policing, not cutting our budgets further.”

In Merseyside, savings of £84 million have had to be found since 2010 with more than £18 million additional savings estimated to be needed by 2021/22. This has already meant a reduction of more than 1,000 officers in seven years.

Voluntary Sector Grants from Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS)

Where other departments have unwisely chosen to scrap grant programmes, Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) have continued theirs and recently announced four new funds. They opened the funds on 11th May and the closing date for applications is 8th June. All applications must be submitted through Bravo Solutions, which is an online ‘sourcing portal’ that allows you to submit your bids to deliver the work.

All four grants are designed to encourage voluntary organisations ‘to pilot, develop and test to provide a proof of concept’ in different areas. In this round the funds are looking at violence amongst young black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people in prison as well as resettlement for BAME people back into the community, services for people with learning disabilities and autism, and better understanding the needs of people with Acquired Brain Injury or Traumatic Brain Injury.

  • £153,000 to develop a whole prison approach to working with young, violent offenders, particularly those from a BAME background – link to Contracts Finder
  • £70,000 to improve services for offenders with learning disabilities and autism, and to provide access to expert advice to support sentence planning to improve outcomes – link to Contracts Finder
  • £203,000 – understanding and meeting the needs of individuals with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in English and Welsh male prisons and Welsh approved premises – link to Contracts Finder
  • £99,000 – reintegration support package for integration into the community for BAME offenders leaving custody after a long term prison sentence – link to Contracts Finder

Clinks will advertise these opportunities to our members and beyond because we believe that voluntary organisations have the creativity to respond to the challenges we face in our prisons and in our community services. We will also continue to advocate that HMPPS continue to grant fund the voluntary sector, and will advise on future grant funding rounds.

Clinks remains a supporter of the Grants for Good campaign hosted by the Directory for Social Change, a coalition of charities which believe in the huge value of government grant-making to the voluntary sector and which aims to protect it.

£115,000 waste prevention fund for Merseyside and Halton community groups

A share of £115,000 is up for grabs to help make the region a cleaner and greener place.

The funding has been made available for Merseyside and Halton community and voluntary groups, schools, faith groups and not-for-profit organisations, who can reduce household waste, encourage recycling and resource re-use, and prevent carbon emissions.

The money is coming from the Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority and Veolia Community Fund 2017/18, which has been running annually since 2006.

The impact of the 2015/16 Fund saw 10 projects deliver 71 full time equivalent jobs (created or safeguarded), participation by 253 volunteers, 24,256 people directly engaged, 680 tonnes of waste material diverted from landfill and £68,000 of equivalent landfill costs avoided.

Previous Community Fund projects have included:

  • Taking in unwanted bikes and cheap bikes from auctions, refurbishing them to ‘as new’ quality and selling them at an affordable price to the local community as well as teaching people bicycle repair and maintenance.
  • Targeting young adults aged 16-25 and providing a two-day course, arming club leaders with the skills and support to establish ‘Mersey Waste Muncher’ cookery clubs that focus on reducing food waste.
  • Delivering a series of learning workshops enabling people to gain skills to revitalise unwanted furniture and textiles.
  • Training homeless people with the skills to design and make attractive furniture and household accessories from waste, with the items going on sale at the Emmaus Superstore in Seaforth.
  • Reducing the amount of reusable items going to landfill at the end of the academic year by collecting unwanted materials from student accommodation and redistributing cleaned and repaired items back to new students and the local community.
  • Re-using waste wood from domestic properties and gardens to improve visitor facilities and livestock conditions at Home Farm in Croxteth Park and providing training opportunities in re-use.

Chairperson of Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA), Councillor Graham Morgan, said: “We’ve made this money available for new and existing projects which can have an impact on their local community and make Merseyside and Halton a cleaner and greener place for us all to live and work.

“Giving groups the opportunity to get involved in looking after their environment can only bring benefits to all and can help us appreciate items as valuable resources rather than something which otherwise might be just thrown away.”

Interested groups should complete and submit an Expression of Interest with MRWA. If applicants are shortlisted then they will be asked to fill in a more detailed Community Fund entry.

Successful applicants can be awarded up to £25,000 for schemes which operate across Merseyside and Halton, and £8,000 for projects which work solely at local authority level.

Projects will have eleven months to deliver their schemes and will be expected to get started in May.

Knowsley’s Centre 63 are one organisation to have benefitted from the Community Fund. Jeane Lowe, Chief Executive Officer at Centre 63, said: “The Community Fund has been pivotal in enabling ‘Bike Back 63’ to take in unwanted bikes from the Knowsley community and refurbish them for local residents to re-use and also to help reduce the need for car journeys within the Borough. This support has also enabled us to upskill young people who are NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) and isolated older adults to become bike mechanics and repair old unwanted bikes which are donated back into the community.

“We have also delivered a popular ‘Earn-a-bike scheme’, ‘Bike loan scheme’ and taught over 150 children and young people how to ride a bike and simple bike maintenance techniques.”

Funding applications now open for £458m Single Investment Fund

Following approval of the Single Investment Fund (SIF) prospectus at last week’s Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, applications for round one funding are now invited.

The SIF is the key funding tool for the Liverpool City Region, and will address the City Region’s strategic priorities.  Just over £458 million is being invested in the City Region over the next five years as part of the City Region’s Devolution Agreement with the Government.

The Single Investment Fund prospectus will be used to commission and fund key growth projects in areas which include business growth and sector development, research and development, skills development and adult education budget, transport and other infrastructure, regeneration, town centre development and culture.

The application process for phase one of funding is now open.

5 New Projects Awarded Funds by Sefton Council

Sefton Council has announced the latest projects to be approved as part of the Community Transition Fund.

The fund was established to assist community organisations in developing Sefton’s communities. In order to qualify for capital from the £1,000,000 pot, any schemes must be linked to the council’s priorities, in particular the support of Sefton’s most vulnerable residents.

The latest projects to be approved are:

 Migrant Workers Sefton Community

Set up in 2010 with the aim of supporting migrant workers and their families in the Southport Area, Migrant Workers Sefton Community offers advice and guidance to help integration into the borough.

In July 2015, the charity became a ‘third party hate crime reporting centre’ and worked with Sefton Council, the Illegal Money Lending Team and multimedia company, Handstand Films, to produce an information video publicising the issue of loan sharks across Sefton.

Migrant Workers Sefton Community has been awarded £4,680 to help expand their Bus Pass for Over 60s and Pre-Esol Community Language projects.

Waterloo Community Centre

Waterloo Community Association has been running the community centre for 10 years and was recently gifted the hall by the Archdiocese of Liverpool. The building, which is Grade 2 listed, has been refurbished through funding and ongoing maintenance has been carried out by the trustees.

During recent routine maintenance a potentially dangerous fault was found which resulted in part of the building being closed off as a precaution.

The organisation has been awarded £9,620 from the Community Transition Fund to pay for urgent repair works to the building, which will allow the full reopening of the centre.

Sefton Veterans Project

The Sefton Veterans Project has been running for over 2 years and aims to improve the mental health and well being of veterans in Sefton. The project, funded by the CCG VCF Fund and managed by Expect LTD, has a trained psycho-therapeutic counselor who offers early intervention mentoring.

Through its work, Veterans in Sefton has found that many ex-service personnel are not ready to accept help for mental health issues. This often results in them hiding away from society and their families, and in many cases turning to addiction. Veterans that have been helped by the project believe it has saved them 4-6 weeks’ worth of therapy.

Veterans in Sefton has been awarded £13,767 split into two parts. The first £5,000 will be used to continue funding the psycho-therapeutic counselor on a session basis, for an interim period of three months.

The remaining £8,767 is earmarked as a contingency commitment to continue the project for a further four months beyond March 31, 2017. This will allow Veterans in Sefton to continue whilst seeking alternative funding. Should the project not need the remaining money it will be returned.

Heritage at Risk Officer

Sefton Council’s Heritage at Risk project enables the authority to prioritise heritage work, build community resilience and understanding as well as maximising opportunities for alternative sources of funding in the future.

Sefton Council has been awarded £35,000 from the Community Transition Fund to expand the project, including the Heritage Lottery bid to repair the town at Christ Church, Waterloo,  support for projects outlined in the Southport Development Strategy and large scale heritage at risk council owned buildings, such as Victoria Baths and Southport Pier.

Summer Holiday Food Provision Project

As part of Sefton Council’s welfare reform agenda, a range of partners came together to discuss the potential of providing free meals to children in need across the school summer holidays.

Following the discussions, it was agreed that Sefton Children Centres could expand the paid for service they already provide across the holidays to include an additional number of targeted families who could not afford to pay for this support.

Cabinet has approved the use of £5,040 from the Community Transition Fund towards to the delivery of this project.

Cllr. Trish Hardy, Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing, said: “The Community Transition Fund is a fantastic way for community organisations to access much needed money to help kick start their work.

“Community organisations, volunteers and other groups are vital in creating resilient communities and it is important we do everything we can to help them.

“I am delighted that we have been able to support this latest group of projects and organisations.”

The Celebrate England Fund! (Big Lottery Funding)

Six out of ten people surveyed say they cannot remember ever coming together to celebrate with their community. The Big Lottery Fund wants to help change this with their Celebrate! programme.

They are offering grants of between £300 and £10,000 for groups to hold one off events or activities which celebrate their local community.

You could celebrate something from your community’s history or a local hero. Or maybe it could a chance to bring people together to get to know their neighbours better.

The Big Lottery Fund have a total of £3.875m for projects in England.

Grassroots organisations to benefit from Merseyside PCC’s fund to cut crime

Twelve grassroots organisations which work to cut crime and protect communities on Merseyside have been awarded a share of more than £132,000 by the Police Commissioner.

Jane Kennedy received dozens of bids from community groups, charities and third sector organisations after opening up applications for grants from her Crime Prevention Fund for the third year running. A total of 116 bids were submitted for grants of between £5,000 and £25,000 with the total combined value being requested amounting to more than £1.7m.

The aim of the fund is to help local groups protect their communities, by stopping problems before they occur, reducing the opportunities for crime and by preventing people from becoming involved with anti-social and illegal behaviour.

Today, Jane has announced the 12 successful organisations which will each be given a share of this round of funding to make a difference in their neighbourhoods. Many of the organisations focus on preventing young people getting involved with crime and raising their awareness of key issues.

Among the successful organisations were the Royal Court Liverpool Trust who were awarded £20,000 to continue to run their hard-hitting drama Terriers. Terriers has received rave reviews from schools for helping to raise awareness among young people of the dangers of getting involved with gun and gang crime.

The Commissioner also awarded £15,000 to the Ariel Trust to help run their ‘It’s not OK!’ project aimed at providing resources to support teachers to deliver preventative education to young people on a range of issues, including domestic, homophobic and online abuse.

The funding will also go to Breckfield and North Everton Neighbourhood Council (BNEC) to help them deliver their Making Waves project which delivers both outreach and centre-based services for young people living in areas of high deprivation. £18,000 was allocated to BNEC to help run a free gym and fitness sessions, as well as gun and knife crime awareness workshops.

A scheme to improve the skills, lives and well-being of unemployed young people in some of Liverpool’s most deprived areas will also benefit from the grants. Employability Solutions received £9,000 to help run their ‘This is my Story’ project which focuses on tackling gun and gang related problems in the Speke and Garston area

Other successful projects will look to increase awareness of forced marriage in schools which have been identified as having high-risk students, a scheme to prevent repeat incidents of domestic abuse, increase knowledge and awareness of abusing legal highs and substance in schools, colleges, workplaces and youth clubs across Merseyside and a scheme which supports serious substance misusers to recover from addiction.

The funding will also be used to support Liverpool Pride by providing funding for its ‘COME OUT of the shadows’ campaign which will see popular landmarks across the city lit up to help build awareness of LGBT issues. The project will initially see the Three Graces, the Radio City Tower and the Wheel of Liverpool illuminated.

Jane said: “Once again I received a staggering response to my invitation for bids for my Crime Prevention Fund.  The number and quality of the bids I received demonstrates the wealth of fantastic initiatives taking place across Merseyside to prevent and tackle crime and keep our communities safe.

“I am delighted to announce that 12 organisations will this year benefit from a cash boost from the Fund. Each of these organisations are taking an innovative approach to addressing the issues they have identified in the communities they serve. They each showed genuine passion and a real drive to make a difference.

“Providing these small grants to prevent crime before it occurs can have a huge impact in the long term by helping to deter people, especially young people, from entering the criminal justice system, reducing the number of victims and making our communities better places to live.

“I look forward to seeing all these projects being delivered over the next year.”

Organisations who applied for the funding needed to show how their project would work to tackle the objectives set out in the Commissioner’s Police and Crime Plan. These include tackling serious and organised crime, preventing crime and anti-social behaviour, providing a visible and accessible neighbourhood policing style, supporting victims, protecting vulnerable people and maintaining public safety.

Applications needed to demonstrate how the initiative would deter individuals from committing crime, reduce the number of people entering the criminal justice system, or lower reoffending. They were also assessed to see how well they would protect vulnerable communities. The fund was administered by Liverpool CVS and Sefton CVS.
