Sefton MBC & Historic England: Waterloo & Southport Heritage Trails

heritage logos

Historic England together with Sefton Council are working on a new series of new Heritage Trails for Waterloo and Southport.  As part of this we intend to use pictures of the Conservation Area and of selected sites within the Area, to go onto the final product.  Most importantly we wish the images selected to come from the community rather than commissioning from a professional photographer.

Three trails will be produced;

  • Waterloo (Covering Christ Church and Waterloo Park conservation areas)
  • Southport Historic Parks
  • Lord Street

The final trails will be 2 sided, be both paper (50,000 copies) and digital hosted on the Visit Southport website (and hopefully interactive as part of an app in the future).  The first side will be a general history of the area, and include general scenes and hopefully some older images.  The other side will include a map with a selection of highlight sites – each to have some text and an image.

How can you help ?

  1. Find one of the key views in the Conservation Area and take a photo of it and send it in
  2. Have a look for any old images that you might have – perhaps from the 1960s ? 1930s etc. (convert to digital format) and send them in
  3. Look at the list of highlight sites (overleaf) and take an interesting photo of one or some of these and send it in
  4. All images should have a file name in the following format – name of site, name of photographer, date taken

Where to send them …

Please upload your photos to the Visit Southport flickr page at Please upload all phots by Friday 22 April 2016

What happens next …

  1. A working group chaired by Historic England will select the most suitable images to populate the trail.
  2. A selection of the images will be printed and on display at the Atkinson Gallery as part of their exhibition on Southport
  3. The images sent in will be used as part of a rolling presentation at The Atkinson

Image Issues

All images need to be digital

The selected images would be credited to the photographers on the trail, but by sending them in you would be relinquishing the copyright and agreeing to the reproduction and use of these on the trails.

Photos should be of a reasonably high quality/size (a very general rule of thumb would be that the higher the MB the higher the image size, or the higher the DPI (dots per inch) the higher the image size)
